Hydrops was found in lingual surface mocosa of epiglottis in all these patients and abscess of epiglottis developed in 2,and laryngemphraxis in 1 and tracheotomy was carried out.
These bacteria, and particularly Haemophilus influenzae, have a special preference for the superior portion of the larynx and the epiglottis, causing epiglottitis.
The epiglottis lies over the entrance to the larynx. In the act of swallowing, when food and liquid move through the throat, the epiglottis closes off the larynx, so that these things cannot enter.
A special deterrent to this event is provided for by a flap of cartilage attached to the root or the tongue that acts like a lid over the larynx. .This flap of cartilage is called epiglottis.
Right at that moment, there’s a spoon-shaped flap of cartilage called the epiglottis which acts like a lid and seals the airway off so that the food doesn't end up in the lungs by accident.
